Aaron Allen - How many oceans are there? (free choice 2)

This article was interesting for a variety of reasons. The question as to what are the different oceans has changed since I have been in school. Growing up, I had learned that there were 4 oceans that could be found across the globe. At some point during my schooling, there was an argument to this claim, stating that there was an additional ocean. While this claim was growing in popularity, there were different arguments that supported it and that went against it. Based on the article, there is one global ocean. This means that in some shape or form, all of the oceans around the world connect to each other. Additionally, there were once 4 named oceans that are around the world. However, in today's society, the world of science recognized that the Southern Ocean is official and makes the total oceans reach 5. This article was interesting to me because it shows the evolution of oceans over time. Originally, there was an ocean that was larger that took up the space of the Southern Ocean. But this has changed and it has gotten its own name and is recognized by the US. One question I have is: What led to the recognition of this "new" ocean when it was originally part of the 4 oceans.
