Scottie Gilg- "Analyzing causes of urban blight using cognitive mapping" study response (outside reading 3)

This 2022 study analyzed the causes of urban blight. By using cognitive mapping and

decision-making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), Researcher Bruno Pinto,

along with two other scientists, were able to see an understanding of blight and identify its factors.

In the experiment, cognitive mapping, which is the representation of thinking about a problem

followed by the process of mapping, was used to identify, select, hierarchize, and group causes of

blight. DEMATEL was used to identify the causes that result in urban blight. At the end of this

study, it mentions the importance of identifying blight before it is too late. Researchers are able to

understand that urban blight is not an easy task to take on due to its complexity and subjectivity.

This study talks about how urban blight is a tangible issue in today's society that affects not only

the residents living in these neighborhoods, but also surrounding neighbors. In regards to levels

of economic, social, and environmental viability and livability, it continues to affect many people.

This study allowed me to further my understanding of cognitive mapping and see if it would be

applicable for the urban light in Newport News. I want to have a better understanding of how to

identify factors of urban blight before it is too late.
