Beverley Arbogast Blog Post 10 (Light Pollution at CNU)
In my study of light pollution at our university, Christopher Newport University, I found it has been facing a growing concern over the amount of light pollution on its campus. I knew this for a while because when I came here I noticed I couldn't gaze at the stars because there weren't many shown in the sky. Light pollution is the excessive or misdirected artificial light that interferes with the natural darkness of the night sky. It can have negative effects on wildlife, human health, and astronomical observations.
The university has taken steps to reduce its light pollution by installing shielded lighting fixtures and turning off unnecessary lights during certain hours. However, there is still room for improvement as some areas on campus remain overly illuminated.
Reducing light pollution not only benefits the environment but also saves energy and reduces costs. The university should continue to prioritize reducing its light pollution by implementing more sustainable lighting practices. In conclusion, Christopher Newport University’s efforts to reduce light pollution are commendable but more work needs to be done to ensure a healthier environment for all living beings.
