Caroline Dillard Free Response 5: 4/16/23 (Trees are awesome)

The very first time I walked the Noland I took note of a quote on one of the signs near Lion's Gate:  "Today I have grown taller from walking with the trees." - Karle Wilson Baker. Now every time I walk in Noland or anywhere with trees this quote enters my mind. The first time I read this, it struck me with how true the statement was. I spend half of my walks looking up at the many amazing trees. This includes the diverse shapes and colors of leaves, trunks, stems, flowers and more. I love identifying the trees as well. After a walk through the trees I always feel better and more amazed by the earth. I am very lucky to also be doing my Master's thesis on trees. This summer I am doing a germination experiment on two populations of Eastern red cedar in which we will investigate salt tolerance. In the late summer and all of next year we get to investigate the growth and survival of Eastern red cedar in response to salt.
