Caroline Dillard Outside Reading 3: 4/1/31
I recently read How to Talk to a Science Denier by Lee McIntyre. McIntyre outlined the five basic forms of science denial and wrote about the most effective ways to talk to science deniers. This includes, firstly, to acknowledge them and get to know them. From there, do not overwhelm them with tons of scientific evidence because that is not the problem. Their beliefs are likely based in identity and if you present a lot of evidence their identity will feel threatened. Instead form a personal connection with them built on mutual trust. A helpful question could be, “what could change your mind on the matter? "This question puts the power in the hands of the science denier. This book made me think about the science deniers in my life. From my knowledge I do not know anyone who 100% does not believe in climate change, but I do know family members who think we are doomed and that it is not their fight because they will be gone by the time things get bad. This book helped me understand what the people I know are thinking and how to approach them.
