Ieasa Custer- Braiding Sweetgrass (outside reading). 9

The 3rd chapter of Braiding Sweetgrass is entitled ‘The Gift of Strawberries’ and ties beautifully to nature and one of our last lectures on what truly counts as a gift. The chapter surrounds the story of Sky Women's (the creator of earth) death. Skywomen died after she births her daughter but as one last gift to the world strawberries grow from her chest. People are not blessed with strawberries and it is an expectation that we keep gifting them to others. This is truly the definition of a gift because she expects nothing in return, it is simply an act of love. We spoke about this true meaning in one of our last classes too as we discussed trail magic along the AT. I think that nature gives us a plethora of things and though we can accept them as such we also must respect earth enough not to take what we are not given. The idea of gifting from nature is being abused and it is our responsibility to step up with love instead of greed.
