Ieasa Custer- Sacred Waters. 6 (outside ‘reading’)
In March of 2023, I attended an anthropology logic conference in Georgia. During the conference I learned about many amazing studies and acquired a ton of new knowledge. One of the lectures revolved around sacred waters and their importance. This was definitely my favorite lecture because of how well it combined science, faith and culture. The speaker first began by addressing many sacred water sources mainly consisting of wells. She discussed how a variety of different religions have wells and water sources that they believe hold extra spiritual value. People must respect them and they can be prayed to. After this section she transitioned into healing waters. Most of these healing waters also had spiritual beings connected to them that people worshiped in order to receive the cure for their ailments. She then spoke about how these waters' healing properties are connected to science. The makeup of these soils correlate with materials that are used in many medicines. When people bathe in the waters or use the soil near their injury it seeps and gives them healing. I would like to look more into this topic overall.
