Ieasa Custer- Sustainability at CNU.3 (free response)
We discuss a lot how we all must do our part to keep the planet safe and clean which ties to sustainability. We must have practices that benefit the environment in place and that is very important at an institutional level, however CNU seems to be lacking in a few ways. First, we have discussed the importance of letting native plants thrive but it is quite apparent in the layout of this campus that everything is perfectly correlated to improve looks not quality. This can be related to the trees, grass, and plants. In addition CNU lacks some of its behind the scene practices. My Junior year at CNU, I completed an observational study of recycling at CNU and to say the least it was disappointing. Trash cans and garbage cans look the same here in hopes to uphold aesthetics. Due to this, people are often confused as to which receptacle to use and in turn contaminate the recycling. Because of this the waste companies are forced to just throw all of it away and we are back at square one. CNU has been urged to change this process in order to help the environment, however little progress has been made. Recently, I did observe stickers being placed on outside recycling bins to help them be more visible so maybe we are headed the right way.
