Mary Robinson - Outside Reading Reflection 4

The documentary, “Cod is Dead,” that we watched in class was something that I had a bit of prior background knowledge on and could relate to. I enjoyed watching it and seeing things pointed out that have affected my family, as well. Marine fisheries regulations are designed to promote sustainable fishing practices, protect fish stocks, and conserve marine ecosystems. While regulations have many benefits, many people don’t realize that they can also have negative impacts on the lives and livelihoods of marine fishermen and society as a whole. Regulations can have a significant economic impact on fishermen. For example, quotas or limits on fishing can restrict the amount of fish that a fisherman can catch, reducing their income and profitability. In some cases, regulations can even force fishermen out of business, particularly those who rely on fishing as their primary source of income. Additionally, complying with regulations can be costly for fishermen, particularly if they require additional monitoring or enforcement activities. This can be particularly challenging for small-scale fishermen or for countries with limited resources. Fishing communities often rely on the fishing industry for their livelihoods, and regulations can have a significant impact on local economies. For example, if regulations reduce the amount of fish that can be caught, local processors may be forced to close, and local markets may suffer. I was glad that we watched the documentary in class and hope that it was able to provide other perspectives for the class. It is essential to recognize the social and economic impacts of regulations and work towards finding solutions that balance conservation goals with economic interests and the needs of local communities. This can include engaging with fishing communities in the decision-making process, providing support for the transition to sustainable fishing practices, and ensuring that regulations are enforced fairly and effectively.
