Natalie Hinderliter- Choice Topic 1- Becoming One
Today in class I was especially struck by what Dr. Redick said about wanting to decompose and become one with the environment he was in while on the Appalachian Trail. I think its so interesting how we as a society have moved away from viewing ourselves as a part of our environment. Rather modern views put humanity as something above the rest of our ecosystems. We view ourselves as above the struggles and processes of the 'natural' world, either completely detached or as some form of higher being that has been tasked with stewarding the earth. It was incredibly interesting to hear someone recount their experience challenging these societal ideas of humanity. The sentiment of wishing desperately to return to the earth in the way that all organisms do is such a natural one, yet the human race has moved away from it. I'm curious to learn more about how this shift in perspective has effected how we as humans view the earth and its processes.
