Natalie Hinderliter- Outside Reading 4- Lobster Notching

As more and more aquatic species are being fished and caught into extinction, fishermen are finding new ways to preserve species that are on the brink of disappearing. In the lobster industry, fishermen have come up with a universal symbol, a tail notch, to communicate which lobsters are breeding females. Any female lobster carrying eggs is given a small on her tail to indicate that she's capable of reproduction and then the females lobster is released. This encourages the replenishment of lobster populations and is an effective communication tool for any future fishermen who may catch female egg-laying lobsters during the times when they do not have eggs. This process allows as many egg-laying lobsters as possible to live on and continue to reproduce, keeping lobster populations from being depleted. This simple action of choosing to return female reproducing lobsters to the ocean is helping to replenish and preserve the lobster population. However, this idea is not as appealing to some. Many fishermen have fought back against the tail notching mandates, and are advocating for profits in the short term rather than the long term. While keeping the female lobsters would provide the fishermen with immediate profits, returning them to the sea to reproduce ensures that there will still be enough lobsters to support the fishing industry in the future. When it comes to conservation, this is a fairly standard message, we must choose to invest in the future rather than choosing immediate gratification.
