Outside Reading 4: Restoring the Great Lakes https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/habitat-conservation/how-we-conserve#restoring-the-great-lakes
I wanted to take a dive into the conservation of certain bodies of water. I came across an interesting reading about the restoration of the Great Lakes. These lakes are the largest fresh water systems on earth and support an abundance of fisheries and establish jobs for many people that use the lakes for survival. Recently, the Great Lakes have been facing many threats including habitat degradation, overfishing, invasive species and pollution from chemical spills. The NOAA organization is working to restore fisheries to its full potential and create a sustainable and environmentally balanced ecosystem to support fish species for years to come. They have supported 92 recent projects in the Great Lakes as well as 4,700 acres of habitat and 500 miles of stream for these species to thrive again. The significance of the Great Lakes is very crucial to take care of since it is home to thousands of species that benefit the land around it. I am interested to see that this organization can accomplish in its next environmental project.
