Outside Reading 5: Sea Level Rise in Newport News https://www.marisa.psu.edu/misc/outlooks/2022-01-11/VA/Newport_News_VA.pdf
I chose to take a look into the recent studies done on the current and future projections on the sea level rise in the Newport News area. This article by the Community Climate Outlook states the necessary background information needed for individuals to know the concern of how climate change affects the sea level rise and how in Newport News specifically since it is a peninsula surrounded by the James River, York River and the Chesapeake Bay. They predict an additional 1-6 feet rise in sea level within the next 50 years due to the increasing global temperature and the melting of glacier caps from the north part of the world. The city has already experienced tidal flooding from recent storms and storm surges string enough to destroy local communities. Experts also suggest that the rise in sea level is also coming from changing rainfall patterns that causes property damage and and poor city drainage. I mainly wonder if there is any reasonable solution humans can do to possibly slow down or stop the climate change from raising the sea levels before it is too late and does massive amounts of damage to cities and communities located on major water ways.
