Sam Ziemba: Free Response 5

Driving past CNU and down Jefferson Avenue, you will come across a long strip of abandoned buildings. All of these are vacant and are not only an eyesore, but pose a negative environmental impact. These spaces could be plots of vegetation or a forested area, but are instead apart of a cement wasteland. These cannot support any wildlife or plant life, which seems like a waste of space in our already urbanized area. According to the fire marshall, about 15% of all buildings there are vacant. These serve no purpose but to take up space. I was glad to hear that Newport News Green has initiatives to designate green spaces across the city, and I hope that some of these buildings can be torn down and restored into green spaces.
