Sam Ziemba: Outside Reading 5: Chicago Wild Mile Plan

This document describes the framework plan for the Chicago “Wild Mile,” an eco-park designed to help improve the water quality of the urban Chicago River. This plan discusses planting native vegetation alongside the river to act as a riparian zone that will absorb pollutants and decrease runoff. This plan also proposes planting floating gardens of native species to help clean the water of pollutants. The “Wild Mile” framework vision intends to provide a green space and a healthy river to be utilized by Chicago residents and provide a healthy habitat for native wildlife. This framework plan was published in 2019, but has since been implemented in the Chicago River and has received positive feedback, although no studies have yet been published on improvements in water quality. It is interesting to see what another city is doing to combat pollution in its urban waterway and makes me wonder what similar approaches could be taken in Newport News.
