Sasha Stevens- Environmental health reading- Fast Fashion

Today I read an article on the UN environmental programs thoughts on fast fashion. Fast fashion is a term used to describe the rapid production and consumption of clothing in response to the latest fashion trends. The environmental impacts of fast fashion are significant and far-reaching, as highlighted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on their website. One of the major impacts of fast fashion is the pollution of water and land. The production of clothing requires large amounts of water, and the chemicals used in the production process can contaminate nearby water sources. Additionally, the large amount of textile waste generated by fast fashion ends up in landfills, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose. Another significant impact of fast fashion is the release of microplastics into the environment. Many fast fashion garments are made from synthetic materials, such as polyester, which shed tiny plastic fibers when washed. These fibers enter waterways and can harm marine life, as well as potentially entering the food chain and impacting human health.

In conclusion, the impacts of fast fashion on the environment are severe, and urgent action is needed to address them. Consumers can make a difference by reducing their clothing consumption, choosing sustainable and ethical clothing options, and supporting the development of a local economies and better quality textiles.
